If your students do not usually stay on task during listening lessons, you can try viewing lessons instead. They are more captivating and appealing to students. In this post, EFL Collective suggests two education-related viewing lessons you could try with your EFL/ESL classes.
Lesson 01: Schools in Britain
Level: Elementary and Pre-intermediate
Timing: 55 mins
The length of the video: 6 mins
Worksheet: Download it from here.
NB: Please note that the video dates back to 2014, and some policies might have changed since then. Given this, we suggest that you do some reading to see whether all the information the video presents about the British educational system is still valid. While learners view mainly for certain bottom-up and top-down skills, they should also be provided with valid information. As such, you can still use the video, as long as you update your students on any recent changes.
Suggested Procedure:
Pre-viewing Phase:
- You can have students speak about their schools (timetables, levels, subjects, etc);
- Students can also be asked to write a list of wishes about their schools (e.g. I wish we had…..at our school because….)
While viewing Phase:
- First viewing (preferably with subtitles on): Students do exercise 1.
- Second viewing: Students do exercises 2 and 3.
Post-viewing Phase:
- Speaking or Writing: Students could draw some similarities and differences between British schools and their schools.

"If you educate a boy, you educate a man. If you educate a girl, you educate a nation/generation"
You can read this article to enrich the discussion.
While-viewing Phase:
- Allow the students some time to read the tasks and understand them, then watch the video.
